The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has introduced a new initiative that allows students to resit their West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) as early as January and February. This marks a significant departure from the previous system, where candidates had to wait for the next private exam session to improve their grades.
In a statement, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, announced that the new programme, called WASSCE PC1, aims to provide a quicker and more efficient opportunity for students to enhance their results. Registration for the resit exams is already open, with a deadline set for 8th January 2025. Students can register online through WAEC’s website or at any WAEC-accredited internet café. The exams will be held from 24th January to 15th February 2025.
To support students in their preparation, Kapi revealed that WAEC plans to fast-track the release of the chief examiners’ reports, which highlight areas of improvement and common mistakes from previous exams. This additional resource is expected to boost candidates’ performance and readiness for the resit.
The announcement has been met with widespread approval. Felix Oluwaseun Agbesanwa, Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, described the initiative as a positive development and a step in the right direction for education in West Africa.
