Young Nigerian Innovators Create AI Tool to Protect Forests From Destruction
Three Nigerian teenagers from Port Harcourt have developed an artificial intelligence-powered solution aimed at protecting forests, offering a strong example of how children can contribute to environmental protection and national development when properly supported.
The innovators, Lesley John Jumbo, Bright Sunday, and Blessed Pepple, created a system known as Reforest AI. The tool uses artificial intelligence, sensors, and Internet of Things technology to detect illegal logging activities in real time. It also triggers alerts and deterrent signals when suspicious activity is detected in forest areas.
Their innovation comes at a time when Nigeria continues to experience rapid forest loss due to illegal logging, agriculture, and weak enforcement systems. According to environmental data, the country has lost most of its primary forest cover over the past two decades, raising urgent concerns about climate change and biodiversity.
Beyond its technical design, Reforest AI demonstrates how children and adolescents can develop practical solutions to real-world problems. The team built the system after identifying gaps in forest monitoring and deciding to create a low-cost alternative that works even in remote areas without internet access.
