Tragedy in Ondo as 18-Month-Old Baby Loses Life in Farm Settlement Attack

An 18-month-old baby has been brutally killed at a farm settlement in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State, sparking renewed concerns over the safety and protection of children in vulnerable communities.

The toddler, who was the daughter of a farmer, was allegedly attacked at Agoti Settlement on Monday, June 8, 2026. Her father, Mr Bright Kalu, said the child was left in the care of her mother at the farm camp while he went to work on a nearby farm.

According to the father, his wife later reported that an attacker invaded the settlement and that she managed to rescue three of their children, but one child was missing. A search later led to the discovery of the baby’s body behind their home.

The incident has raised concerns about the dangers children face in isolated communities, where limited security presence can expose them to serious harm. Young children are among the most vulnerable members of society and require stronger safeguards from violence, abuse, and neglect.

The father has appealed to the Ondo State Government, security agencies, and human rights organisations to ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice.

The matter was first reported at the Olofin Police Station in Idanre before being transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Akure.

The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities said investigations are ongoing and the suspect will face prosecution if found culpable.

The tragedy highlights the urgent need for stronger child protection systems, especially in rural and farming communities where children remain at increased risk.
