34 Days in Captivity: Oyo, Borno Schoolchildren, Teachers Still Await Rescue

The abducted schoolchildren and teachers from Oyo and Borno States have now spent 34 days in captivity, raising fresh concerns over their safety and the government’s rescue efforts.
Families, civil society groups and concerned Nigerians continue to demand urgent action. They want authorities to secure the release of the affected persons and improve security around schools.
In Oyo State, the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area remains a major concern. Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier revealed that the abductors were operating from a forest covering about 10 local government areas.
The disclosure showed the scale of the security challenge facing the state. It also increased calls for stronger operations to locate the abductors and clear criminal hideouts.
Meanwhile, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has urged security agencies to take decisive steps against the rising cases of kidnapping and banditry in the Southwest.
Through its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the group called for increased efforts to rescue the abducted schoolchildren and teachers. Afenifere also warned that attacks on communities and traditional leaders were becoming more worrying.
The organisation linked the situation in Oyo with wider security concerns in Borno State and other parts of the country. It stressed the need for better coordination among security agencies.
Also, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Frederick Agbedi, criticised the Federal Government’s response to the Oyo abduction. He said stronger action was needed to address insecurity.
Following the incident, President Bola Tinubu sent a delegation to Oyo State and assured Nigerians that efforts would continue to secure the release of the affected persons.
However, 34 days after the abduction, the schoolchildren and teachers from Oyo and Borno remain in captivity. Pressure continues to grow on authorities to intensify rescue operations and ensure their safe return.
