Denver schools tighten student discipline, new report shows

< 1 min read

Denver Public Schools are predominantly employing “permissible” disciplinary actions, raising questions about the adequacy of their response despite recent scrutiny following a shooting incident at East High School. The district introduced a new disciplinary matrix this year to standardize corrective measures, with 94% of the 8,000 actions meeting the criteria, an improvement from the previous year’s 83%. However, concerns persist about the disproportionate discipline of Black students, even though the responses align with permitted punishments. Superintendent Alex Marrero acknowledges the need for further improvement, with a revised disciplinary matrix set to debut for the upcoming school year after community input.
