Kids Count Report: Michigan’s Education Rank Drops Amid Chronic Absenteeism, Falling Test Scores

< 1 min read

The 2024 Kids Count Data Book by the Annie E. Casey Foundation reveals that Michigan’s child well-being has declined, placing the state 34th in the nation, down two spots from the previous year. The report analyzes economic well-being, education, health, and family/community factors, highlighting education as the most concerning area with Michigan ranking 41st. Key issues include low preschool enrollment, low proficiency in reading and math among students, high school dropout rates, and chronic absenteeism. Despite challenges, improvements in child health and declining teen births show positive trends in Michigan. Economic well-being remains a significant challenge, with many children living in households facing economic hardships.
