After the Columbine shooting in 1999, I, a middle school teacher, discussed with my sister whether we could protect our students in such a situation. At the time, I had young children and realized I couldn’t sacrifice my life for my students, as my own children needed me. Teaching had never meant risking my life. Despite the natural worry about school shootings, I try not to dwell on it to focus on my daily responsibilities. I remain strong for my students but feel the weight of these concerns in private. After recent shootings, like the one in Georgia, I’ve felt overwhelmed and emotional. I am skeptical about significant changes to gun control due to the strong influence of the NRA.
