I’m a Gen Z Teacher. Schools Rely too Much on Chromebooks

Lightweight laptops have become essential in post-COVID classrooms, allowing students to learn at their own pace and create projects without expensive resources. However, Skyler Graham, a Gen Z teacher in Brooklyn, expresses concern about the reliance on technology, fearing it exacerbates the negative effects of excessive screen time. Reflecting on her own experiences with smartphones, Graham notes that while she viewed phone use as a way to connect, her parents saw it as isolating. Recent research, including Jonathan Haidt’s book “The Anxious Generation,” links increased screen time to rising mental health issues among adolescents. Since 2010, anxiety and depression rates among young people have surged.
