When we think of neglectful parents, our minds might drift to someone who doesn’t provide food or clothing—perhaps someone who leaves a child home alone before it’s developmentally appropriate.

However, emotional neglect can happen when a parent is in the room with the child—heck, it can happen during nutritious, multi-course meals.

“Emotional neglect is failure to meet a child’s emotional needs such as validation, warmth and safety to explore and express their emotions,” says Dr. Brittany McGeehan, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist.
