Chicago Public School teachers have returned to the classroom as their contract negotiations with the district continue. The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) held a press conference Monday, providing an update on the ongoing discussions.
CTU President Stacy Davis Gates expressed hope for a resolution, stating, “In 2025, we intend to settle this. It is our hope that we can settle it at the negotiating table.” Both sides acknowledged progress, including the delay of a fact-finding process that could have led to a strike. Key agreements have been made, such as offering housing assistance for homeless students, hiring more English learner teachers, and expanding Sustainable Community Schools.
However, major disagreements remain. The union is pushing for guarantees to prevent layoffs or furloughs, more prep time for teachers, and changes to the current evaluation system, which many educators find burdensome. Davis Gates also accused CPS CEO Pedro Martinez of stalling progress, while CTU member Tara Stamps highlighted the strain of the evaluation process on teachers.
Despite the tension, both sides continue to negotiate with hopes of reaching a fair settlement in the near future.
