A tragic fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda, Zamfara State, has claimed the lives of 17 Almajiri students and left 17 others injured, authorities confirmed.

The fire started late Tuesday night and burned for approximately three hours, causing severe devastation. According to local reports, the blaze was likely triggered by stored sticks, locally known as “Kara.” A resident, Abdulrasaq Kaura, described the heartbreaking scene, explaining that more than 100 students were inside the Makaranta Mallam Ghali study hall when the fire broke out. Although efforts were made to evacuate them, it was only after the flames were extinguished that some students were found burnt beyond recognition.

The Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Mannir Haidara, confirmed the incident and stated that he was on his way to assess the situation. The Zamfara State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Yazid Abubakar, also verified the reports, adding that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.

The deceased students were buried on Wednesday, while those injured are receiving medical attention.
