UNICEF Commends Thailand for Banning Corporal Punishment of Children

UNICEF Thailand celebrates a historic milestone with the passage of an amendment to Section 1567 of the Civil and Commercial Code, officially banning all forms of violent discipline, including corporal and psychological punishment of children. With this amendment, Thailand becomes the 68th country in the world to prohibit such practices in all settings, including homes, schools, daycare centers, and juvenile protection facilities.
Published in the Royal Gazette on 24 March 2025, this legislation strengthens the protection of children’s rights and aligns with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. While violent discipline at home has declined, dropping from 75% in 2015 to 54% in 2022, no child should be subjected to harm.
UNICEF urges the Thai Government to expand support for parents and caregivers, promoting non-violent discipline methods to create safe, nurturing environments. International research shows that legal bans on corporal punishment are most effective when paired with education and resources for positive parenting.
This is a bold and essential step towards ending violence against children. UNICEF Thailand remains committed to working with the Government and communities to ensure a safer future for every child.
