Grief has engulfed the Durum community in Bauchi Local Government Area following the tragic drowning of three teenagers on Tuesday, July 23.

The affected children, Habibu Mohammed (16), Abubakar Mohammed (16), and Zailani Sule (14) drowned in a river near Jinkiri Village after engaging in mining activities. The incident occurred around 1 pm, shortly after the boys went for a swim.

According to community leader Yakubu Ahmad, the boys frequently visited the area for mining and swam afterward. “This time, their luck ran out. We are heartbroken,” he said.

Despite prompt efforts by residents to rescue and rush them to the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, the teenagers were declared dead on arrival.

Police spokesperson SP Ahmed Wakil confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing. Preliminary findings suggest the boys entered the river after mining work. Their bodies have been released to their families for burial.

The drowning of the three teenagers is a violation of the child’s right to life and protection from child labour, both of which are fundamental under Nigerian and international law. Every child has an inherent right to life, survival, and development, and no child should be exposed to hazardous work that endangers their health or well-being.
