Police in Sokoto State have arrested 25-year-old Sufiyanu Aliyu, of Gwanyal Village in Tangaza Local Government Area, for killing his 15-year-old wife, Suwaiba Abubakar Bawa, during a domestic dispute.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson of the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, the incident occurred on October 27, 2025, at approximately 7:30 p.m., following a heated argument between the young couple at their residence.

A Good Samaritan reportedly alerted police officers, who arrived to discover that the teenage girl had been stabbed with a knife. The police recovered the weapon at the scene and immediately arrested the suspect. The affected child was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

Rufai said the suspect confessed during preliminary interrogation and that the case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.

The State Commissioner of Police commended the swift action of the responding officers and reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring justice for the affected child. He urged the public to seek peaceful ways of resolving domestic issues and to report suspicious or criminal behavior promptly.

This tragic incident underscores the urgent need to safeguard the rights of children, especially girls, vulnerable to early marriage and domestic abuse. Every child is entitled to protection from violence, harmful practices, and exploitation.

Communities, families, and authorities must work together to uphold these protections and ensure that children grow up safe, supported, and free from abuse.
