MSCS leaders credit academic growth to 2-teacher classrooms

< 1 min read

January 26 2024- Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) attribute recent academic gains to the addition of roughly 750 Specialized Education Assistants (SEAs) during the 2021-2022 school year. The SEAs have played a crucial role in supporting teachers and students, particularly in addressing individual needs within the classroom. Teachers express appreciation for the assistance, highlighting the impact on students who may require extra attention. The district reports a 5% growth in literacy scores and a 4.3% growth in math scores as a result of the SEAs’ contributions. While progress is evident, there is acknowledgment that further efforts are needed to address proficiency disparities, especially among black and Hispanic students in Tennessee. MSCS staff remains optimistic that the continued support of SEAs can contribute to positive changes in these statistics.
