Should WA schools restrict cellphones? One district has

< 1 min read

February 6 2024- The Peninsula School District in Gig Harbor, Seattle, has implemented a ban on social media access and restricted cellphone use in classrooms, citing concerns about distractions and potential addiction-like behaviors observed in students. Kris Hagel, the district’s executive director of digital learning, noted that the decision was influenced by changes in students’ relationships with their devices, particularly following the challenges of the pandemic. Despite initial concerns, the district has experienced less pushback than expected, and some unexpected positive outcomes have been reported. District and school leaders made the move after hearing concerns from parents, teachers, and students about disruptions in classrooms.
