February 8 2024- Clark-Shawnee Local School District in Springfield had to cancel school due to a shortage of bus drivers. The national bus driver shortage, which persisted throughout the previous year, continues to impact schools in 2024. The district, which runs 19 bus routes, had only 19 drivers available. Some drivers called out sick following the holiday, leaving the district with insufficient staff to cover routes. The shortage prompted the consolidation of routes and, in this instance, the decision to cancel school for the day. The district is actively seeking more drivers to address the ongoing challenge of staff shortages.
