Child Abduction

Fresh Twist in Oyo School Abduction as Troops Track Kidnappers Into Forest

Fresh details have emerged in the ongoing rescue operation following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The Defence Headquarters says troops have now made direct contact with the kidnappers as security agencies intensify search efforts.

The update comes days after investigations revealed that suspected informants allegedly helped the attackers through phone communication and local intelligence. Authorities believe the kidnappers used forest routes inside the National Park to avoid detection during the operation.

Director of Defence Media Relations, Major General Michael Onoja, said troops engaged the abductors two days ago and later reorganised to continue pursuit operations.

According to the military, joint operations are ongoing across forest corridors and remote areas in the South-West. Security agencies are also relying on information from residents and local vigilantes to trace the victims.

The abduction has continued to raise serious child protection and safeguarding concerns across Oyo State. Many parents remain afraid to send their children back to school following the attack on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele; and L.A. Primary School.

Security experts warn that the involvement of suspected local collaborators makes schools in rural communities even more vulnerable. They say children face risks not only from armed groups but also from insider networks that provide information to attackers.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters dismissed reports claiming terrorists have established permanent bases in the South-West. Military authorities described the attack as an isolated criminal incident rather than evidence of an organised insurgent structure in the region.

The Armed Forces also assured families that rescue efforts remain active. Troops are currently combing forests and surrounding communities in search of the abducted pupils and teachers.

Last week’s attack reportedly left two teachers and an okada rider dead, while dozens of pupils, school staff, and a toddler were abducted.

Although the government has promised to restore security, fear and uncertainty continue to spread across affected communities.
