Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 Highlights Dignity, Safety and Protection for Girls Worldwide

The world is marking Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 with renewed calls for safer and more supportive environments for girls and young women.
This year’s theme, “#PeriodFriendlyWorld,” focuses on ending stigma and improving access to menstrual health services, education, and sanitation facilities. Since its launch in 2014, the campaign has continued to promote dignity, equality, and protection for girls during menstruation.
WASH United coordinates the global campaign with support from organisations including UNICEF. Together, they encourage communities to create spaces where girls can manage menstruation safely and confidently.
Experts say menstrual health plays an important role in child protection and wellbeing. However, many girls still struggle to access sanitary products, clean toilets, and accurate health information.
As a result, some children miss school during their periods. Others face shame, bullying, or exclusion because of harmful beliefs surrounding menstruation.
Unsafe sanitation facilities also remain a major concern in many communities. Without privacy and proper hygiene support, girls can face emotional stress and health risks.
This year’s activities include school programmes, awareness campaigns, educational events, and online discussions. Organisers will also release a draft “Shared Agenda for Action on MHH” to encourage stronger investment in menstrual hygiene support.
Child rights advocates say menstrual health should not be ignored. They believe every girl deserves clean facilities, reliable information, and safe environments that support her growth and education.
Campaigners also stress the importance of open conversations about periods. They say breaking silence and stigma can improve confidence and inclusion for millions of girls worldwide.
As Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026 is celebrated globally, supporters hope the campaign will continue to protect girls’ dignity and strengthen their right to safe and healthy lives.
