Nigerian Caregiver Jailed After Stealing $17,000 Meant for a Disabled Child in US Case

A United States-based Nigerian caregiver has been sentenced to five months in prison for stealing over $17,000 in Social Security benefits meant for a child with disabilities under her care. The case has raised serious concerns about child safeguarding within care systems.

Court records show that Akeatha Diane Akintola, 48, pleaded guilty to theft of public funds. She diverted $17,638 meant for a child with intellectual disabilities. The money was meant to support the child’s welfare and daily needs.

Prosecutors told the court that she falsely positioned herself as a representative payee. She used the child’s Social Security details despite restrictions placed by the Snoqualmie Tribe. Afterwards, she transferred the funds into an account she controlled.

Investigators uncovered the missing funds after irregularities surfaced. This triggered a formal probe into her financial activities. She later left the United States before returning for sentencing.

During the hearing, authorities stressed the breach of trust involved in the case. They said caregivers must protect children, not exploit them. The affected child, who is autistic, depended on the funds for stability and care.

Additionally, the court ordered Akintola to repay the full amount stolen. She also received a permanent ban from serving as a Social Security representative payee.

Child protection advocates say the case highlights weak oversight in some care systems. They continue to call for stronger safeguards to protect children with disabilities from financial and emotional exploitation.
