After Oyo Rescue, CAN Calls for Freedom of Every Abducted Child

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has welcomed the rescue of pupils and teachers kidnapped from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo state, calling on the government to persist efforts till all children abducted by armed groups anywhere in the country are safely back home.
In a statement signed by the President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said the rescue of the Oyo schoolchildren after 56 days abduction was a moment of gratitude for the children, reminding the authorities that many children, including Borno State abductions, are still in captivity.
Our schools once again must be a place of learning, not a place of fear. No parent should be forced to either educate a child or keep him or her alive,” Okoh said.
The association applauded the children’s release, citing the concerted efforts of President Bola Tinubu, security agencies, Oyo State Government, local hunters and vigilantes. It also welcomed Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s commitment to provide rehabilitation and support for the rescued pupils and teachers.
CAN further emphasized that all children are entitled to be protected, irrespective of their place of abduction, calling on security agencies to ramp up their rescue efforts in Borno, Niger and other states where children are detained.
The association also urged all governments, religious institutions and humanitarian organisations to offer counselling, medical assistance and psychosocial services to recovered children, adding that the process of recovery is not just about getting them to freedom.
Child protection specialists stress the impact that extended captivity can have on children, including the potential for trauma; interruption to their education; and permanent developmental damage; and the importance of safe rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration in safeguarding each child affected.
