Nigeria’s Young STEM Stars Make History, Win Gold at Global Olympiad in Rome

Nigeria is celebrating the outstanding achievement of three young students who won gold medals at the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale in Rome, Italy, bringing pride to the country and highlighting the potential of Nigerian children in science and mathematics.
The students, 11-year-old Onyedikachi Egejurum, 13-year-old Chimdiebube Onwubiko and 17-year-old Don Anele Munachimso, represented Nigeria at the global competition, which attracted participants from more than 150 countries.
Egejurum emerged as the world’s best in the Primary Mathematics category, while Don Anele secured gold medals in Science and another category. Onwubiko also won gold, completing a remarkable performance by Team Nigeria at the international event.
The students earned their place at the competition after emerging among the top performers at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad, a regional contest that attracted more than 11,500 participants.
Education advocate and Educare CEO Alex Onyia, who supported the children’s participation in the competition, celebrated their success and described the achievement as proof of what Nigerian children can accomplish when they receive the right support.
Their participation in Rome was made possible through sponsorship that covered travel expenses, including registration, visas, flights and accommodation.
Child development advocates say the victory demonstrates the importance of investing in children’s talents, education and creativity. They emphasise that opportunities such as international competitions help children build confidence, develop critical thinking skills and inspire others to pursue excellence.
The achievement of the three young Nigerians has renewed calls for greater investment in STEM education and stronger support systems to help more children showcase their abilities on the global stage.
