Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval for Education Reform Bill

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to fast-track the passage of the National Senior Secondary Education Comission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, a proposal that could strengthen the management of public senior secondary schools and improve children’s access to quality education across Nigeria.
The bill, transmitted to the Senate on Thursday, seeks to enhance the administration, coordination and governance of public senior secondary education as part of the Federal Government’s education reform agenda.
From a child rights perspective, the proposed legislation is expected to support efforts to provide learners with better-managed schools, stronger education systems and improved learning opportunities. Child rights advocates have consistently stressed that every child has the right to accessible, equitable and quality education in a safe learning environment.
In his letter to lawmakers, President Tinubu said the amendment would strengthen educational institutions in the national interest and urged the Senate to give the bill speedy consideration.
After the letter was read during plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action, directing the committee to report back within one week.
Education stakeholders say effective implementation will be crucial if the proposed amendment becomes law. They note that stronger governance should translate into improved teaching, better learning conditions and greater accountability, ensuring that every child can enjoy their right to quality secondary education regardless of where they live.
