“Aunty No”: Viral Video Leads to Rescue of 12-Year-Old Girl After Alleged Knife Attack in Abia

A 12-year-old girl in Abia State has been rescued after an alleged attack by her aunt, bringing renewed attention to the need for stronger protection of children from violence within homes and caregiving environments.
The Abia State Police Command said it arrested a 35-year-old woman, identified as Nwoko Gift, after a video showing an alleged assault on the child circulated widely on social media.
According to the police, operatives from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters, Umuahia, responded to information about the incident and rescued the girl. A kitchen knife was recovered as an exhibit, while the suspect was taken into custody.
The command said preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred on July 5 at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia, after the child allegedly failed to complete a household task assigned by the suspect.
Police also stated that investigations indicated the child had allegedly experienced repeated physical abuse and threats before the latest incident. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, and the suspect is expected to face charges after investigations are completed.
The incident highlights concerns around children who depend on relatives or other caregivers for protection and support. Child protection experts have consistently stressed the importance of safe reporting channels, early intervention, and community awareness to prevent abuse from escalating.
While authorities continue investigating the case, the focus remains on ensuring the child receives appropriate care, safety, and support following the alleged attack.
The police have urged members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse to relevant authorities to enable timely intervention and protection of affected children.
