A vigilant community effort in Aiyetoro Kiri, Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, prevented what could have been another devastating abduction of schoolchildren.

Members of the Kiri Vigilante Group acted swiftly when bandits attempted to invade Kiri High School, confronting the attackers and rescuing every student who had been seized during the assault.

This attempted attack came only days after the country witnessed the kidnapping of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the abduction of over 300 students and pupils from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Niger State.

Local authorities confirmed the attack on Kiri High School but stressed that it was successfully foiled. The rescue came at a heavy cost: one vigilante member and one Hausa resident lost their lives during the operation.

Security teams and local hunters have since intensified patrols. At the same time, the Local Government chairman urged the public to avoid spreading unverified reports as joint forces continue combing the surrounding forests for the attackers.

This incident underscores the urgent need to uphold children’s rights to safety, education, and protection from all forms of violence. Every child has the right to attend school without fear of abduction, injury, or psychological harm, and the right to grow in an environment where their dignity and well-being are safeguarded.
