Children’s Day Celebration Turns Chaotic in Edo as Students Collapse at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium

A Children’s Day celebration in Edo State turned chaotic after several students were affected by tear gas during an event at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Thousands of pupils from different schools gathered at the stadium on Wednesday for the annual celebration. According to the Edo State Government, the venue became overcrowded as children arrived in large numbers from across the state.
Officials said confusion started near one of the entrances after some students became unruly, creating a stampede-like situation. During efforts to control the crowd, a security operative reportedly discharged tear gas, causing panic among the children.
Several students inhaled the substance and reportedly collapsed during the incident. Witnesses said many children, especially female students, became frightened as people rushed for safety.
Emergency responders and medical workers quickly attended to the affected students. Some children received first aid at the stadium, while others were taken to hospital for further treatment.
Authorities later confirmed that most of the students recovered and were discharged the same day. Two students remained under observation before returning home to their families.
From a child protection and safeguarding perspective, the incident has raised serious concerns about safety planning at public events involving children. Experts say large gatherings for children require proper crowd control, trained security personnel, and child-sensitive emergency response measures.
Child welfare advocates also warn against the use of tear gas or similar substances in crowded spaces filled with children. They say such actions can cause panic, breathing difficulties, emotional trauma, and avoidable injuries.
The Edo State Government described the incident as regrettable and confirmed that the security operative involved is under investigation. Officials also urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation capable of creating unnecessary fear.
Despite the quick medical response, the incident has renewed calls for stronger safeguarding policies at school and children’s events. Parents and child rights groups say celebrations meant to honour children must always prioritize their safety, wellbeing, and emotional protection.
