The seventh assembly of the National Children’s Parliament has called for the full implementation of the Child Rights Act (CRA) to address critical issues affecting Nigerian children, including child marriage, child labor, kidnappings, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and other harmful practices.
Key Resolutions from the Assembly:
-
- Ensuring safety for children, especially in schools.
- Working with the government and NGOs to create safe spaces for children.
- Launching sensitization campaigns in rural areas to combat harmful traditional norms, including FGM and tribal markings.
The Parliament called on the government, traditional rulers, the international community, and the general public to unite in safeguarding children’s rights, emphasizing that the government alone cannot achieve this goal.Duncan Harvey, Country Director of SCI, urged governments to prioritize budgets for implementing child rights, emphasizing a shared vision to prevent violence, abuse, and harmful practices against children. He highlighted that protecting children from violence and exploitation enables them to achieve their full potential.
The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, represented by Permanent Secretary Gabriel Aduda, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting children’s rights to participation and tackling the issues raised by the Parliament.nThe Ministry emphasized child participation as a key principle of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the CRA, ensuring children’s voices are heard in matters that affect them.
The Children’s Parliament plans to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to implement the CRA effectively, especially in rural areas with limited awareness.
