Ekiti Invests Big in Education as 14-Year-Old Spelling Champion Gets Full Sponsorship to World Finals in China

The Ekiti State Government has decided to sponsor 14-year-old African Spelling Bee champion, Oluwadamilola Adeolu, to represent Africa at the World Spelling Bee competition scheduled to hold in China, in what officials describe as a strong commitment to the child’s right to education and participation.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji also approved cash rewards totaling N8 million for the champion, her coach, and her school, St Lawrence Metropolitan College. Under the arrangement, Adeolu will receive N2 million, her coach, Esther Omolayo, will get N1 million, while the school will receive N5 million in recognition of its role in her success.

The sponsorship package also covers Adeolu’s mother, her coach, and two other representatives from her school to enable them attend the global competition alongside her.

The governor said the gesture reflects his administration’s commitment to prioritising education and rewarding excellence, noting that the state remains focused on creating opportunities that allow children to develop and showcase their talents.

From the perspective of child rights, the intervention underscores the importance of education as not only access to learning but also participation in academic and developmental opportunities that enhance a child’s growth and confidence.

The initiative is also expected to encourage other students across Ekiti State to take their education seriously, while promoting a culture of academic excellence and healthy competition within schools.

Officials say the programme further reinforces the state’s investment in education as a key pillar of development, with continued efforts to support talented students and improve learning outcomes across all levels.
