Celebration of children

History Beckons as Four Nigerian Children Compete at World Spelling Bee

Four exceptional Nigerian kids have made history not just for themselves, but for the entire nation, by competing for the country in the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup, which takes place in Shanghai, China this year, as a testament to children’s talent, determination and academic excellence on the international stage.

Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi and Maryam Yusuf were the young people who qualified, and did a great job at the Nigerian Spelling Bee and the African Spelling Bee Championship.

The team is led by St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti’s 14-year-old Oluwadamilola Adeolu, who won the Junior Category of the African Spelling Bee in Harare, Zimbabwe recently. Her great performance helped Nigeria to finish second overall in the continental championship.

Adeolu, who spoke before the competition, was excited to represent Nigeria and meet young spellers from other countries.

I’m excited for the competition, to meet new spellers around the world, to expand my vocabulary, to get more confident about my spelling abilities worldwide, and to take the trophy home,” she said.

The other members of Team Nigeria are Abdurrahman Yusuf from Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin and Maryam Yusuf from the same college and Chinedu Okediachi from Madonna International Schools, Asaba.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee has said that the country had made a historic achievement in the global competition as the children were carrying Nigeria’s dreams and Africa’s pride.

The team’s success goes beyond the competition, demonstrating the value of investing in children’s education, literacy and academic development. They are doing well and demonstrate the achievements that can be achieved when children are supported, encouraged and given the opportunities to achieve.

The four young Nigerians are encouraging kids across the nation to dream big, work hard and know that their talents will take them to the world stage as they compete in the Chinese metropolis.
