Maryland Mother Sentenced to 50 Years for Shooting 13-Year-Old Daughter in Neck

A Maryland woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after being convicted of shooting her 13-year-old daughter during a violent family dispute, in a case that has raised serious concerns about child safety in the home.

The incident happened in September 2024 at the family’s residence in Seat Pleasant. Court records show that the mother, identified as Talecka C. Brown, became involved in a heated argument with her daughter, which escalated into physical confrontation.

During the incident, Brown allegedly shot the girl once in the back of the neck as the teenager moved away toward a staircase. The child collapsed at the bottom of the stairs and was unable to move after being struck.

Prosecutors said the mother later instructed the child to tell authorities that an intruder was responsible for the shooting. However, investigators later uncovered evidence that contradicted this claim and led to her conviction.

The girl sustained severe injuries to her upper spinal region. Medical reports confirmed that bullet fragments affected areas near her shoulder and abdomen. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition and underwent emergency surgery, including procedures to help her breathe.

Authorities confirmed that the child survived but faced a long and difficult recovery due to the extent of her injuries.

Following her trial, Brown was convicted of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, assault, and firearm-related charges.

Officials described the case as deeply disturbing, stressing that children must be protected, especially within their homes. They reaffirmed the importance of accountability in cases of violence against children and praised investigators for ensuring justice was served.
