Nigerian National Arrested Over Alleged Child Sexual Abuse Inside Toronto Grocery Store

A 35-year-old Nigerian national has been arrested and charged in Toronto after a reported sexual assault involving a child inside a busy grocery store, raising renewed concerns about child protection and safeguarding in public spaces.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2026, around 7:00 p.m. at a commercial area near Victoria Park Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East. Police say the child was shopping with their parents when the suspect allegedly approached and committed the assault.

According to the Toronto Police Service, the suspect attempted to flee the scene immediately after the incident. However, a civilian bystander pursued him while police units responded to emergency alerts in the area.

Authorities later launched a brief manhunt after issuing a public safety notice. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Idris Olajide Oladejo, was eventually located and arrested on June 23, 2026. He has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.

From a child protection perspective, the case highlights the importance of vigilance in public spaces where children are present. Safeguarding experts often stress that safety risks are not limited to private environments, but can also occur in everyday community settings such as shops and markets.

The accused made his first court appearance at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre. Police say investigations are ongoing and have urged anyone with additional information to come forward.

Child safety advocates continue to call for stronger community awareness, rapid response systems, and increased reporting mechanisms to better protect children from harm.

The case remains under active investigation as authorities work to establish full circumstances surrounding the incident.
