Ogun Horror: Couple Caught With Three Stolen Children, Police Uncover Pattern of Child Theft

Concerns over child protection have increased in Ogun State after police arrested a couple accused of stealing three children in the Mowe area. The case has renewed attention on child safety gaps and exposure to trafficking risks in public spaces.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Mathew Ugochukwu and his wife, Oluwarankami Kehinde Ugochukwu. Officers also rescued three children during an intelligence-led operation in the area.
According to police spokesperson Babaseyi Oluseyi, the incident started at a clinic in Mowe. A mother reported that her four-month-old baby disappeared while she was receiving treatment.
One suspect allegedly offered to help care for the baby. The suspect then left the clinic with the child and did not return.
Following the report, police launched a coordinated search across the area. Officers later tracked the suspects to a hideout in the Kekere Ekun area of Mowe.
The operation led to the rescue of the stolen infant and two other children found in their possession. Authorities suspect a pattern of deception targeting vulnerable families in similar settings.
Investigators also discovered that one rescued child had been declared missing in a previous 2024 child-stealing case. This raised concerns about possible repeat offences linked to the suspects.
Parents of two rescued children have already identified their wards. The children are now receiving protection while investigations continue.
Meanwhile, child protection advocates are calling for stronger safety measures in hospitals and public spaces. They also urged parents to be cautious when accepting help from strangers.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the officers involved in the operation. He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling child trafficking and related crimes.
Authorities have urged residents to report suspicious behaviour promptly. They said community vigilance remains critical to preventing child theft cases.
The development adds to rising concerns over child safety across Nigeria. Security agencies say stronger cooperation is needed to protect vulnerable children.
