Oluremi Tinubu Faces Backlash Over Children’s Day Message as Abducted Schoolchildren Remain in Captivity

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, is facing criticism from several Nigerians on X following her Children’s Day message, with many users describing the statement as insensitive amid the continued captivity of abducted schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states.
The backlash followed her message encouraging children to focus on discipline, character, and education while celebrating the 2026 Children’s Day theme, “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child.”
However, many netizens argued that the message failed to directly address the plight of dozens of children still being held by armed groups nearly two weeks after attacks on schools in Oyo and Borno.
Child protection concerns have continued to grow since terrorists attacked schools in both states, abducting pupils and teachers during coordinated assaults. Reports indicate that at least 81 schoolchildren remain in captivity.
Several users on X questioned how Children’s Day celebrations could continue without stronger public attention on the missing children. Others accused political leaders of ignoring the emotional pain faced by affected families.
The criticism intensified as rescue operations remain ongoing with no confirmed release of the abducted pupils.
Child rights groups warn that prolonged captivity can expose children to severe emotional trauma, fear, and long-term psychological distress. They also stress that school attacks continue to threaten access to education across vulnerable communities.
Some Nigerians on social media called on political leaders to prioritize the safe return of the abducted children before issuing ceremonial messages.
Despite the criticism, the Federal Government has continued to reassure citizens of ongoing rescue efforts and broader commitments to child welfare and inclusive education.
Meanwhile, families of the abducted pupils in Oyo and Borno remain anxious as they await the safe return of their children.
