Ondo Moves to Shield Children as Insecurity Threatens Right to Education

The Ondo State Government has inaugurated a steering committee for the Safe Schools Programme as part of efforts to protect children’s right to education amid rising security threats.
The programme, which aligns with the Federal Government’s Safe Schools Initiative, aims to protect students, teachers, and school facilities from kidnapping, violence, and other criminal activities.
Speaking during the inauguration in Akure, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, said the committee would provide direction, improve coordination, and strengthen safety measures across schools in the state.
The committee includes representatives from the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and the Parents-Teachers Association.
Ajibefun urged members to work together to prevent security threats in schools. He stressed that protecting children requires the commitment of every stakeholder.
The move highlights the importance of safe learning environments where children can fully enjoy their right to development through education. When insecurity keeps children away from classrooms, it affects their academic growth, confidence, and future opportunities.
Recent security challenges have increased concerns about the safety of schools in several communities. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Akindele Ige, noted that the committee was created in response to these growing threats.
He emphasised that children cannot learn effectively when fear surrounds their education.
With the new committee in place, Ondo State is taking steps to ensure that students can return to classrooms without fear and continue their educational journey in a safer environment.
