Ondo School Closure for Election Triggers Debate on Children’s Right to Education

The Ondo State Government has ordered the temporary closure of selected public primary and secondary schools ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) State House of Assembly election. The decision has raised fresh concerns about children’s right to uninterrupted education.

In a statement from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, authorities confirmed the affected schools will serve as polling centres. The election is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2026, across all 18 local government areas in the state.

Officials explained that the closure is necessary to ensure safety during the electoral process. They also said it would help secure learners, teachers, and school staff during voting activities.

However, education observers have expressed concern about repeated disruptions to academic calendars. They argue that such closures affect learning continuity, especially in public schools where instructional time is already limited.

The ministry directed all learners, teachers, and staff in the affected schools to remain at home on election day. It also confirmed that school administrators have received instructions for strict compliance.

In addition, education officials will monitor enforcement across the affected local government areas. The government said this is to ensure order and coordination during the election period.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have continued to question the impact of frequent school closures on learning outcomes. Some say it weakens efforts to improve basic education standards in the state.

Despite these concerns, the government maintained that the decision prioritizes safety and public order. It added that academic activities will resume on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

The ministry also assured parents and candidates sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC-SSCE) that arrangements are in place. According to officials, the examination process will continue without disruption in affected schools.

Even so, education advocates continue to call for better planning. They insist that children’s right to education must remain protected, even during political activities.
