Powerful Earthquakes in Venezuela Put Thousands of Children at Risk, UNICEF Warns

Thousands of children face heightened protection risks after powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026, according to UNICEF. About 3.9 million children live in affected areas.

The earthquakes, measured at magnitudes 7.5 and 7.2, hit Caracas and several states, including Aragua, Carabobo, Falcón, La Guaira, and Miranda. Communities continue to assess widespread damage.

Buildings collapsed in several locations. Reports also indicate that children are among those affected as rescue efforts continue. Authorities are still verifying the full extent of the impact.

UNICEF warned that children remain highly vulnerable in disasters. Risks include injury, separation from caregivers, displacement, and psychological distress.

Access to essential services has also been disrupted. These include healthcare, safe drinking water, education, and child protection systems.

In addition, damaged schools and health facilities may limit safe spaces for children. This increases the risk of further harm in the coming days.

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said the situation is deeply concerning. She stressed that children’s safety and well-being must guide all response efforts.

Humanitarian teams are working with national authorities to assess urgent needs. The focus includes medical care, psychosocial support, safe water, and child-friendly spaces.

UNICEF also noted that many families will require urgent assistance as aftershocks remain possible.

The agency continues to coordinate response efforts to protect children and support affected communities across the disaster zones.
