Rivers School Pleads Reopening After Toddler’s Death Sparks Safety Probe and Cover-Up Allegations

The management of Wisdom Gate International School in Eligbolo, Rivers State, has appealed to the government to lift the suspension placed on its operations following the death of a two-year-old pupil, Winnie Akakue, whose fatal injuries were reportedly caused by a collapsing bookshelf in a classroom. The request comes amid ongoing grief, public concern, and heightened scrutiny over child safety standards in early childhood education settings.
The incident has already triggered a broader child protection and safeguarding investigation into the school’s duty of care, particularly in relation to classroom safety, supervision of very young children, and the management of preventable hazards within learning environments. From a safeguarding perspective, the case raises critical questions about whether adequate risk assessments and safety measures were in place to protect vulnerable pupils during school hours.
While the state government has maintained the suspension pending full resolution of the matter, the school argues that continued closure is affecting other pupils’ education and placing staff livelihoods at risk. Some parents have also appealed for the school’s reopening, citing disruptions to learning and emotional strain on children currently displaced from the classroom.
However, the case remains sensitive due to allegations from the bereaved family regarding possible cover-ups, delayed reporting, and pressure to resolve the matter privately. These claims, if verified, would point to serious breaches in safeguarding protocols, including transparency obligations and mandatory reporting of serious incidents involving child fatalities.
Child protection experts emphasize that schools have a legal and moral responsibility to ensure environments are safe, especially for early learners who require constant supervision and hazard-free spaces. They note that beyond structural safety concerns, proper safeguarding also demands clear communication, independent investigation, and accountability when fatalities occur.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to assess compliance with safety regulations and determine whether systemic failures contributed to the tragedy, while balancing the need for justice, child welfare, and educational continuity.
