A 12-year-old boy died at Trails Carolina, a wilderness camp in North Carolina, on his first night there, according to an autopsy report released Monday. The autopsy determined his death was caused by asphyxia due to smothering, ruling it a homicide. The boy was sleeping in a bivy sack with a torn mesh layer, which had the solid outer layer zipped shut, contrary to safety warnings. Staff had placed an alarm on the zipper to prevent him from opening it. The report highlighted protocol deviations and opaque covering hindering timely checks by counselors. The investigation is ongoing by the Transylvania County Sheriff.
