Karen Carey, a former assistant principal at South High School in Columbus City Schools, has filed a federal civil rights complaint alleging racial discrimination and retaliation by the district and several administrators. Carey, who is Black, claims she was subjected to disparate treatment, including being excluded from meetings and communication channels, as well as retaliation for reporting discrimination. The alleged mistreatment began in September 2020 and persisted for nearly two years, with much of it attributed to actions by South High School Principal Christy Nickerson. Columbus City Schools declined to comment on the matter.
