If HISD Can Slow Down, Then Community Members Might Have a Chance For Input About Principal Hires

< 1 min read

Houston ISD recently unveiled a new plan for selecting principals, offering both streamlined and community-involved approaches. For urgent needs, District Superintendents can make direct appointments from internal candidates or the principal pipeline without community input, approved by Superintendent Mike Miles and division leadership. Conversely, for less urgent vacancies, a principal profile will be crafted based on input from parents and caregivers through methods like surveys, meetings, and engagement with PTO and SDMC. This shift follows concerns from communities, including Herod Elementary, about reduced involvement from Shared Decision-Making Committees, which traditionally included diverse stakeholders in principal selection.
