Maryland school districts struggling to comply with ‘Blueprint’ law

< 1 min read

February 6 2024- The passage discusses concerns in Montgomery County, Maryland, where the school system, the state’s largest with approximately 160,000 students, is facing challenges in complying with a state mandate to expand prekindergarten. The county worries about not having enough private providers to meet the requirements of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, an education reform law. The Blueprint, enacted in 2021, aims to increase annual education spending to over $3.8 billion when fully implemented, requiring districts to enhance teacher pay, special-education funding, and support for students in poverty. The legislative implementation dates were pushed back in 2022 due to challenges posed by the pandemic. Other public school districts across the state are also racing to adapt to the Blueprint’s requirements.
