Dear Care and Feeding,
I was adopted at 13 into a family with five other kids. At 16, my adoptive parents sat me down and essentially said they were done being parents.
They asked me to move out. They had kicked all the other kids out for various reasons between the ages of 13 and 16, but I followed every rule, so they didn’t have a “valid” reason to kick me out. After a conversation, they let me stay until I graduated from high school. I went on to get a full-ride scholarship and put myself through college. Over the years, my adoptive parents sometimes reached out. I tried to maintain a relationship, but it never worked out. After all this, I’ve been telling people a lie.
