Beth Widner, a mother from Canton, Georgia, homeschools her four children while her husband, Glenn, telecommutes. In August 2018, their 7-year-old son, Jackson, was stopped by a store employee for being alone and getting a cookie after swim practice. This led to repeated police and Child Protective Services (CPS) involvement. Despite clarifying misunderstandings, the family faced ongoing scrutiny for allowing Jackson some independence. Beth recently shared her story to advocate for a “reasonable childhood independence” law, which would protect parents who allow their children to have some autonomy. The Widners ultimately moved out of city limits to avoid further issues.
