Parents urged to create routines to combat learning loss amid WNC school closures

Anticipated winter weather could bring more time outside of the classroom, adding to the weeks that Western North Carolina students have lost this school year between Hurricane Helene and winter weather.

Education experts are advising parents to take action to help their student from falling behind any further.

“Online and hybrid instruction is nowhere near as effective as in-person instruction,” said Thomas Kane, Harvard University Center for Education Research faculty director. “There were substantial losses in Buncombe County between 2019-2022.”
