A new UNICEF report reveals that approximately 181 million children under the age of five worldwide, or one in four, are suffering from severe child food poverty. The report highlights that 65% of these children are concentrated in just 20 countries, with about 59 million in sub-Saharan Africa. Titled “Child Food Poverty: Nutrition Deprivation in Early Childhood,” the report examines the causes and impacts of dietary deprivation among young children across nearly 100 countries and various income groups. It warns that many young children lack access to a nutritious and varied diet essential for proper growth and development. Children in severe food poverty consume at most two out of eight defined food groups, with four out of five relying primarily on breastmilk/milk and a starchy staple like rice, maize, or wheat.
