Child Protective Services (CPS) annually investigates over 3 million children in the U.S. to safeguard them from abuse and neglect, but with few positive outcomes and a disproportionate impact on families of color. Jessica Pryce, a former caseworker, discusses the challenges faced by overburdened caseworkers and proposes strategies for better protecting both children and families. She is a research professor at the Florida State University College of Social Work and the former executive director of the Florida Institute for Child Welfare.
