Yukon schools continue to struggle with shortage of teachers-on-call, emails show

< 1 min read

February 8 2024- Yukon schools are grappling with a shortage of teachers-on-call, akin to substitute teachers, as revealed in emails between principals and education department officials. The shortage was notably severe at the start of the 2023-24 school year, with only around 40% of teacher absences covered at F.H. Collins Secondary School in Whitehorse during the first four weeks. Creative measures, such as other staff members filling in, were employed to ensure classes continued. The situation prompted concern, with the Holy Family School Council urgently requesting action from education officials to address the chronic teachers-on-call shortage.
