Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has signed a new law in Freetown, marking a significant step in protecting children’s rights.
The new law prohibits child marriage, making it illegal to marry anyone under the age of 18. Previously, one out of three girls in Sierra Leone became wives before age 18.
The signing ceremony was hosted by First Lady Fatima Bio in Freetown, with first ladies from Namibia and Cape Verde in attendance.
Penalties for violating the law include up to 15 years in jail, a fine of about $4000, or both. The law applies to parents of underage brides, grooms, and anyone who supports or witnesses such weddings.
The law represents a major step in Sierra Leone’s efforts to protect children’s rights, especially those of young girls. The new legislation has been widely celebrated, particularly among feminist groups.
The US Bureau of African Affairs welcomed the law as a significant milestone for human rights protections.
Some concerns exist about implementing the law in rural communities.
