Sokoto Storm Kills Four, Damages School, Hospital, Leaving Children at Risk
The lives of children and families in Kware Local Government Area of Sokoto State have been thrown into disarray by a powerful rainstorm that damaged a primary school, a hospital and hundreds of homes, raising concerns about children’s safety and access to essential services.
The storm, which was accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, has killed four people and injured several others in the communities of Mallamawa, Mai Mushe, Kaura, Sabon Gari and Rungin Tsamiya.
A primary school was among the damaged facilities, which may affect children’s schooling and delay their return to a safe school. The loss of a hospital has also raised concerns about access to health services for children and other impacted individuals in the communities.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it has conducted an assessment of the affected areas to establish the extent of the damage and immediate humanitarian needs of affected people. The results would inform emergency response and relief distribution, the agency said.
Child protection experts point out that natural disasters can create further risks for children, such as disrupted schooling, displacement and reduced access to health and psychosocial services. They emphasize the need to restore child-friendly spaces and necessary services promptly to enable children to recover and learn in safe places.
NEMA said it will keep collaborating with state and local authorities to render humanitarian assistance as it evaluates the extent of the disaster.
