Child Sexual Abuse

Sunshine Coast Childcare Worker Guilty of Indecent Treatment as Child Protection Concerns Raised

A former Sunshine Coast childcare worker, Arvind Ajay Singh, has been found guilty of indecent treatment of a child in his care, though he was acquitted of child sexual abuse. The verdict follows a three-day trial in which 10 witnesses, including the affected child, gave evidence.

The case came to light after reports of inappropriate behaviour by Singh toward a child under his care. During the trial, the jury requested to review video evidence twice before reaching a verdict. While Singh was cleared of child sexual abuse, the conviction for indecent treatment underscores the seriousness of the misconduct and highlights concerns about safeguarding in childcare environments.

Crown prosecutor Alex Stark told the court that the affected child was completely innocent and had no awareness of the nature or significance of the actions. “Their world is unicorns and teddies,” Stark said, emphasizing the child’s vulnerability and need for protection.

Defence barrister Lachlan Ygoa-McKeown argued that Singh did not touch the child’s body and described the child’s evidence as vague and weak. DNA testing returned neutral results and did not support either side.

Singh has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced at Maroochydore District Court on Friday.

The case has renewed calls for stronger child protection measures and safeguarding practices within childcare centres. Experts emphasize the need for robust supervision, staff screening, continuous training, and clear reporting mechanisms to ensure children’s safety.

The incident serves as a reminder that childcare environments must be safe spaces where children are protected from harm, and that institutions have a legal and moral duty to uphold children’s rights and well-being.
